Family Experiences and Support Needs on Aggressive Behaviors of Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the difficulties and needs among mothers of students with autism spectrum disorders who demonstrated aggressive behaviors. This study conducted individual interview with three mothers of students with autism spectrum disorders. First, the mothers reported difficulty controlling their children's aggressive behaviors and fears that unintended aggressive behaviors occurred unpredictably. Second, the family members also reported challenges and difficulties regarding how to deal with aggressive behaviors of students with autism spectrum disorders. Third, it was reported that the behavioral interventions and family support programs provided by special education institutions were not of practical help. Last, participants shared their needs for the practical and systematic supports for families of students with autism spectrum disorders. Implications for future studies are discussed.
